Beech Ridge Motor Speedway Race Report

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – Reid Lanpher of Manchester, Maine, finished 23rd in the PASS North Series Southern Maine Chrysler Dodge Jeep 150 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, on Saturday, May 4. Lanpher became the youngest driver ever to qualify for a PASS North Series race at Beech Ridge and the youngest driver ever to lead laps in a series event. The 14-year-old JR Motorsports development driver won his first-round qualifying heat race and started third in the 28-car field. He took the lead on Lap 5 and held it until a restart on Lap 36, after which he suffered a flat right rear tire and was forced to pit. While working back up through traffic, he was involved in an incident on the backstretch and ended up with a hard hit into the Turn 3 wall which ended his day on Lap 120.

********

REID, WHAT HAPPENED AT THE END?

It was just a racing incident, really. We were fighting up through, and I was on the inside of Bobby Timmons there for a while. He was trying to kind of diamond the track to get some grip because he was loose, and he was trying to come down and get a straight drive off as I was still trying to get up off the corner. We got together, and he got a little sideways. I was trying to straighten him out so we didn’t wreck the field behind us, and after that I lost my rear end. When the left side weight hooked it, it just shot me into the wall.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE THIS WEEKEND WILL STILL BE A POSITIVE GIVEN EVERYTHING ELSE THAT HAPPENED?

Yeah. We were fast, and it gave me a lot of confidence that I could actually run with these guys after not even qualifying at Oxford (Plains Speedway). To start third and win my heat, and then start third in the feature, pass Joey (Doiron) when he was fast, that was big. We got out front and
saved our stuff. It was a big confidence boost, even though it didn’t end the way we wanted. It’s disappointing (the way it ended). We hope to bounce back and run some more races to finish out our season. I’m sure financially it will be tough, but we hope to be back soon and still be fast.

Reid Lanpher became the youngest driver in history (14) to win an event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway when he won an Amsoil NELCAR Legends Tour race on the road course at the facility last May.
Reid Lanpher finished third in just his sixth career Late Model Stock start while driving for JR Motorsports at Southern National Motorsports Park on April 6.
Reid Lanpher won the Super Late Model feature at the Wiscasset Speedway’s “Fall Brawl” last October, earning a victory in just his third career Pro Stock start.
Reid Lanpher competes as a teammate at JR Motorsports to Josh Berry. Berry won the 2012 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track championship at Motor Mile Speedway in Fairlawn, Va.
Just 14 years old, Reid Lanpher has already won Pro Stock, Modified, Legend, go-kart, Mini-Cup, motocross and snowmobile feature events in his career.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

REID LANPHER, Driver of the Team EJP No. 59 Mission Trailers/Eastern Township Docks Chevrolet, On how he feels heading into his second PASS North Series weekend of his career: “I feel a lot more confident. It’s kind of ironic that you’d feel more confident after not making a race last time out, but we know that w’ll have a really good car and I think that I’ll be fast. It’s all going to depend on how we’re going to adapt to the track, and we’ll just go from there.
“It’s so hard to know until you get there.”
On how he will approach this weekend: “We’re going to test both Thursday and Friday, and so pretty much our game plan is to get as many laps as we can going into the race. The more seat time I can get, get as many laps in the car heading into the race, will only help.
“I think another big part is going to be what I draw for a pill (to lineup the heat races). We saw at Oxford how important that can be to your whole day.”
On if anything he’s learned in a JR Motorsports Late Model this season translates to PASS North Series Super Late Model racing: “For sure. Those tires, especially at Southern National (Motorsports Park), wear out. You just eat up tires like crazy. Tire wear was big down there at that track, and you really had to save your stuff for 100 or 125 laps.
“I think it’s really going to help me in these races. I’m going to be in same boat for 150 in the Super Late Model.”

UP NEXT

The Dirty Dozen Cup returns for Round No. 4 with its first visit to Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., for Twin 125 Late Model events on Saturday, May 18… Reid Lanpher qualified third at Motor Mile last weekend, but the Twin 125s were rained out and rescheduled for July.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

REID LANPHER, Driver of the No. 8 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, On his recent test at Motor Mile Speedway: “It went really well. The biggest thing was that I had never been there before, and I felt like we were able to get the car drive-able and consistent. I think at one point I ran four laps in a row that were all within one-thousandth of a second of one another. “(JR Motorsports competition director L.W. Miller) said that he didn’t think he’d ever been that fast testing before with Josh there. I felt really good about how we finished up there.” On how Motor Mile compares to Southern National: “It’s a lot different, definitely. It’s got so much more grip than Southern National has. The tracks look pretty similar, but they drive completely different just because of the grip that Motor Mile has.” On heading back to JR Motorsports after a tough weekend at Oxford Plains Speedway last weekend: “I’m really looking forward to it. I mean, I definitely learned a lot last weekend and it was nice to be back home and race in Maine, but it was pretty disappointing to not qualify for my first PASS race. “It will be good for my confidence to get back with JR Motorsports. We’ve run really well down there so far this year, and we seem to keep getting better every time we go to the track. The competition’s really good there, too, and if we can keep working like we have we should get another good finish.”

UP NEXT
The Dirty Dozen Cup returns for Round No. 5 with a return trip Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., for Twin 125 Late Model events on Saturday, May 18… Reid Lanpher will compete in that event after returning to Maine to compete in a PASS North Series race at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, on Saturday, May 4.

REID, WHAT HAPPENED TODAY?

We were pretty good. We chased the track quite a bit once it heated up, and there were a lot of good cars here. We gained a ton today – we played around with a lot of stuff. We just had a bad draw. We started out back of the best heat out there, just stacked, with a lot of good drivers up there. We got up to sixth, but had more bad luck getting stuck outside (on a restart). We got freight-trained. Then in the consi, we were fast. We started dead last but worked all the way up to sixth or seventh, and I was able to pass (multi-time series champion) Johnny Clark and those guys. Just being on the track with all those guys was really cool. We showed some speed. I would have loved to get in and have a little better luck throughout the day, but the initial draw just really killed us all day. Other than that, we had a really successful day.

WHAT WERE THE POSITIVES FROM THE WEEKEND?

It was awesome working with Andy (Santerre). The knowledge on the crew today was unbelievable. We had some major brains turning there. We made some major gains. I made some gains driving – this series is all new to me, it was my first time on the track and my first time in this car in a year.
If you add up all the bad luck and this being my first time here, we still come out of the weekend better than some other guys did.

DO YOU FEEL YOU’LL BE BETTER PREPARED AT BEECH RIDGE IN TWO WEEKS?

Definitely. I know the track is fairly similar to here, and I’ll have to adapt some to what’s different there. But I think we’ll be pretty good. I’m going to go in there fairly confident.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

REID LANPHER, Driver of the Team EJP No. 59 Mission Trailers/Eastern Township Docks Chevrolet, On making his PASS North Series debut this weekend at Oxford Plains Speedway: “I’m so appreciative, so fortunate to have this opportunity to do all of this racing this year. The drivers and teams up here are as good as anywhere. There’s no doubt there are some big names, and just to have the opportunity to race against them, I couldn’t be anymore thankful.

“To start off, I don’t have a ton Super Late Model seat time. I’m just going to try my best the first couple of weeks and see what we’ve got. There’s a lot of unknowns – we don’t know how good a car we’ll have or how good everything will go or how I will take to the tracks. So, we’ll go in a little blind and hope everything goes well.”

On what he knows about Oxford Plains Speedway: “I really have no idea about the race track. I’ve driven it on iRacing before, but that’s about it. I’m excited about having Saturday to and test, to get the car tuned in. We’ll see what we can learn on Saturday, and then we’ll practice some more on Sunday and see if we can’t get it fine-tuned a little bit more.

“I think the handling going to be a lot different from what I’m used to (in the JR Motorsports Late Model). The chassis, the car, the motor – it’s all a lot different than what I’ve been in.”

On having Andy Santerre as crew chief for his PASS North Series efforts this season: “I’m really excited. He’s got to be one of the most knowledgable guys around there. We’re definitely not going to be lacking brains in the pits.

“I’m excited to be able to race back in Maine for the first time this year. It will be a lot different for me – I know a lot of the people, and it’s going to be fun.”

UP NEXT

The Dirty Dozen Cup returns for Round No. 4 with its first visit to Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., for Twin 125 Late Model events on Saturday, April 27… Reid Lanpher will compete in that event for JR Motorsports before heading back to Maine for the PASS North Series event at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on May 4.

MANCHESTER, Maine – After spending the bulk of the spring running Late Model Stock events for JR Motorsports, Reid Lanpher still has plenty of racing ahead of him close to home.

The 14-year-old Manchester, Maine, driver will complement his JR Motorsports efforts with four PASS North Series starts, several NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, and roughly a dozen Legend car starts. The crown jewel of the summer will come in the TD Bank Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway in July, when four-time NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champion Andy Santerre will serve as his crew chief.

“I’m so appreciative, so fortunate to have this opportunity to do all of this racing this year,” Lanpher said. “The drivers and teams up here are as good as anywhere. There’s no doubt there are some big names, and just to have the opportunity to race against them, I couldn’t be anymore thankful.”

Santerre will be atop the pit box for all four PASS races this season with Lanpher, too, beginning with the season opener at Oxford Plains on April 21. The Team EJP No. 59 Mission Trailers/Eastern Township Docks Chevrolet will be prepared by Tony Ricci of Ricci Race Cars in Westbrook, Maine.

Ricci will work with Lanpher in his seven Pro Series starts at Beech Ridge during the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events there. The 31-year-old veteran driver and crew chief first recommended Lanpher to L.W. Miller – the competition director at JR Motorsports – after working with him during his indoctrination into Super Late Model racing last season.

“I think he’s really going to shine,” Ricci said. “He’s at the point in his career where, yes, he needs to race harder with some better people, and with what he’s doing down south and with the PASS races up here he’s going to have that opportunity.”

Ricci said he knew almost immediately that Lanpher’s potential was through the proverbial roof.

“The first time I went to the track with him, we went to White Mountain (Motorsports Park) testing,” Ricci said. “The thing that jumped right out at me was his ability to adapt to a new situation. Within three laps in a full-sized stock car for the very first time, he was fast enough that it’s where I would have been comfortable if I was preparing to go to a race myself.

“He’s missing only one piece of the whole puzzle – and it’s just experience. It’s only his age that’s keeping him from that. He’s going to get a ton of that this year. He’s good now, but just wait until he gets 30 races in full-sized cars under his belt. He’s going to be even better.”

“Tony is a phenomenal guy to have setting up the cars and taking care of all that, and to have Andy (Santerre) as crew chief – I’m really, really looking forward to that first race at Oxford.

Lanpher also plans to continue racing Legends, including the full 10-race VIP Thursday Thunder series at Beech Ridge. He’ll join the Amsoil NELCAR Legends Tour at Star Speedway in Epping, N.H., for a summer stop and cap off his schedule in October with two Legends races on the road course at New Hampshire Motor Speedway – where he became the youngest feature winner in track history in early 2012.

Jumping from Super Late Models to Late Models to Legends shouldn’t pose a problem for a young driver who has already won Super Late Model, Legend, Modified, motocross and snowmobile races in his career.

“I don’t honestly think I’ve had any trouble in changing from car to car,” Lanpher said. “It’s not like we’re going to run both cars the same day. I just want to focus on one at a time and do the best I can every time out.”

Race No. 1

Josh Berry opened the third week of racing at Southern National Motorsports Park similar to the way he ended the previous event. The 22-year-old driver advanced forward from his seventh-place starting position to take third in the opening 20 laps. From there, Berry held off challenges from veteran driver Tommy Lemons to take third in the night’s first 100 lap race.

For Reid Lanpher, the night began with the Manchester, Maine-native earning a career-best fifth-place qualifying position. The race presented an uphill battle after contact from a competitor shuffled Lanpher’s No. 8 Chevrolet outside the top 10. Lanpher recovered to finish ninth.

Josh Berry, driver of No. 88 Speedco team
“The Speedco Chevy was really good there. Just a bit too free off to run with the top two but it was still a solid run. We had an issue with the carburetor in qualifying that caused a little miss and I feel like that caused us to start too far back to really have a chance to win. I think I just had to use my car up too much coming from seventh.”

Reid Lanpher, driver of No. 8 JR Motorsports team
“Just really disappointed with our finish. We felt like we had a strong car but we had some tire issues that really hurt the drive off the corner and put me in a bad spot a few times. The team is going to make a few adjustments before the second race and we will improve on the finish.”

Race No. 2

The night’s second 100 lap race presented Berry Lanpher with a seven-position invert to determine the starting grid. Berry was able to roll off fifth with Lanpher ninth. Unlike the opening race of the night, Berry saw the handling of his No. 88 Speedco Chevrolet fade away throughout the race. By race’s end, Berry took the checkered flag seventh.

Lanpher found success in the final race of the night. Using lessons he’d learned in the first race, Lanpher progressed steadily through the field, moving up six positions to third in only 20 laps. The No. 8 car was unable to mount a charge on the front two but provided the 14-year-old driver his best finish thus far in 2013.

Josh Berry, driver of No. 88 Speedco team
“I am disappointed with how the race turned out. Hoosier has had issues with tires since the start of the season. They allowed every car to put on 2 new right sides for the second race because of that issue. Reid had a tire come apart in the first race and I think we had the same problem with the right-front tire in this race. The car was horribly tight the entire race.”

Reid Lanpher, driver of No. 8 JR Motorsports team
“I couldn’t ask for a better outcome to this second race. To be able to bounce back to my first top-three finish is huge. I wish we were a little closer to the front, but starting from ninth and not having a caution to bunch everyone back up really hurt our chances.”

Lanpher, 14, finished sixth in the first 100-lap Late Model Stock event in just his second effort in the No. 8 JRM Chevrolet fielded by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. After qualifying ninth – his best time-trialing effort to date – Lanpher used tire management strategy to gain positions in the second half of the green-to-checkered opening 100-lap race. He finished sixth, one spot behind JRM teammate and reigning NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Motor Mile Speedway champion Josh Berry, for his first career Top-10 finish with the team. Lanpher redrew for the outside pole to start the second 100-lap race, but a tight race car – and another caution-free event – made track position difficult to attain. He settled in to finish a strong fifth.

REID, HOW DID THINGS GO FOR YOU AT SOUTHERN NATIONAL?

I really couldn’t be any happier with the final results and the way it all went. The first half of the first race I was conserving tires, because we have to run the same four tires for both races. Those guys in front of me started to come back to me. We used up a little tire to get there, but I was able to pass some pretty good cars. At the end, Josh (Berry) was in fifth and I was in sixth – I almost had him with about five to go. It was pretty crazy being that close to battle my teammate right there. I had to work for those three positions.

For the second race, we made an adjustment to the car – I was loose in the first race and it was going to tighten me up a lot in the second race and then hopefully come to me as the race went on. I was pushing really bad right at the start and I fell back to fifth. It got better, but I had a lot of pressure from behind me so it felt good to be able to hold those guys off.

WHAT WAS DIFFERENT THIS WEEKEND FROM YOUR FIRST TIME IN THE CAR TWO WEEKS AGO?

We were able to make a lot of gains. Going into that first race together (on March 2), we didn’t know exactly what we had for a car. I didn’t have any laps in it, and they didn’t normally go to this track before. We chased it a lot that weekend. This weekend, we were able to go back and make changes ahead of time and know exactly what we’d want going into the race. Everything went great, and I’m slowly getting better at qualifying, because that’s all new to me, too.

The car was really good. Other than running into a little bit of a tire issue from running the same set of tires for 200 laps, everything really worked out great. I couldn’t be happier. The crew works together so well, they’re just very legit. They know what to do for everything, and it shows.

ARE YOU CLOSE TO CONTENDING FOR PODIUM FINISHES AND RACE WINS?

We have the potential for a Top-3, we really do. But just like I feel like we are going to be better every week, everybody else can get better each week, too. The guy who dominated the second race, he was a mid-pack runner the first week. The field is just so good, and there are so many good cars, that you never really know what can happen every time you go to the track.

I really think it’s hard to say, ‘We can do this’ or ‘We can do that,’ but I’d like to think we have potential for a little stronger finish.
